We were thrilled to receive an invite to Cosmo restaurant in Southampton last week, to celebrate the first anniversary of their opening, as well as the launch of their new Christmas Menu 2017.
Two things are guaranteed to put a smile on this Hampshire Mumma’s face, and that is food… and all you can eat! For those of you, who like me, are not familiar with this chain of restaurant, Cosmo takes it’s inspiration from the top 5 hotels in the world, and typically serves Pan-Asian cuisine, alongside Italian and Continental, as well as a carvery, for those times, when only a roast will do! Their newly launched Christmas Menu offers the full yuletide experience in all it’s festive glory!
I have never been to eat here despite having frequented the other restaurants in the new West Quay complex recently opened, and I must admit, the idea of an ‘All You Can Eat Buffet’ sadly reminded me of past experiences with cold, soggy food. I am so glad to have been given the chance to experience Cosmo, because our experience was so far removed from previous similar restaurants.
Upon arriving, we were met by the lovely Manager Omar, who introduced himself and offered us a cheeky glass of bubbly – so far so good, although being designated driver, he was more than happy to provide me with a mocktail (note: Virgin Mojitos were the bomb!).
The restaurant was very busy and buzzing with a fab, relaxed atmosphere; booking is essential and the clientele was diverse, ranging from families, to students, to groups of friends. Immediately it was clearly obvious that this was not your typical buffet – chefs were busy at work in open kitchens, often putting on elaborate displays of culinary skills, such as the teppanyaki experts, who duly impressed us with their performance! Despite being busy, they were more than happy to answer questions and even let us have a go at cooking, although it is fair to say that we won’t be asked to give up the day job too soon!
My choice food wise was mainly Asian, due to my love of this cuisine but do try and leave room to sample other dishes. My best tip when you go would be to eat little, but often – it’s a marathon, not a sprint! All food served was hot and tasty – none of this oily mess that sadly gets served up too often. Using fresh ingredients and cooked regularly, there is little chance of food sitting too long under the hot plates. The sushi was particularly lush, and it was great to see young children trying different types of cuisine.
Do leave room for dessert! You will kick yourself if you don’t! Kids in particular will be in absolute sugar heaven! The ice cream parlour, popcorn machine, candy corner, bite sized treats and the two cascading chocolate fountains are more than enough to keep the ankle biters happy – and the adults! Fruit is plentiful, should you fancy a lighter alternative!
This restaurant undoubtedly offers excellent value for money, especially if you’re a family with teens! Anyone, like myself, with a son age 14, will appreciate this very much, as well as the unlimited soft drinks! As for alcoholic choices, there is an extensive cocktail menu, as well as a well stocked bar offering numerous wines, beers and spirits.
In conclusion, Cosmo is a Buffet restaurant but without the negative ‘all you can eat’ connotations. This is tasty restaurant food cooked by talented chefs, using fine ingredients and tables attended by attentive waiting staff. I’ve been both pleasantly surprised and converted! Thanks to all for a wonderful evening! I will be returning soon, but not as the designated driver!
